The archive was established in the autumn of 2001 by Jonathan Mitchell and initially was to be a boutique agency, though this did not work out as envisaged and so he decided to edit specific public domain images and also add in some work from other photographers and journalists.
A decade later, the archive has tens of thousands of news and reportage stock images - spanning several centuries - is available for Rights Managed licensing and has been used by many publishers to illustrate their publications, ranging from The Times of London to Osprey Publishing, to Dorling Kindersley and even the Daily Record. This has mostly been via sub agents like TopFoto and Hollandse Hoogte.
Now the archive is available on it's own database and has a number of new contributors. While it is not a huge comprehensive archive like Getty Images, it does contain many useful gems and is a great time-saver on some picture research projects. Please search the archive next time you have a wants list from a publisher and you may find some great images for your project.
